Duryea is located in the greater Pittston area of Luzerne County and was incorporated in 1891. The area has rich Native American history and is considered the heartland of the Susquehannock Tribe. Duryea is only 7.2 miles away from Tuxedo By Sarno in nearby Scranton. Like most towns in the region Duryea was a coal mining town in addition to have multiple sand and gravel quarries. There has been some economic resurgence since the death of the coal industry by the Marcellus Shale Company exploring natural gas in the surrounding areas.
